The Brisbane-based designer conceives the 'Metamorphic Table' collection inspired by the formation of metamorphic rocks, and the all-too familiar camouflage pattern.

Renowned Argentina-born Australian designer Alexander Lotersztain derives inspiration for his 'Metamorphic Table' collection from the obtained visuals of fusing various natural marbles and the fashion history of the familiar camouflage pattern. The tables pay homage to the organic patterns found in metamorphic rocks, as well as the traditional craftsmanship and techniques used to craft them into objects, much like Lotersztain's other designs such as 'Tsukiko', a lamp design that amalgamates contemporary and traditional craftsmanship. The product designer combines his choice and understanding of the material with a production process that features the amalgamation mentioned above. The ensuing form is an eye-catching, one-of-a-kind design.
This table design is symbolic, as it takes the camouflage pattern, formerly associated with military application and ruggedness, and uses it to form this delicate yet striking collage of materials that challenges conventions. The design collection's transformation of marble's natural beauty into an unconventional and unexpected visual narrative demonstrates a harmonious blend of contrasting elements. Each table manifests the Brisbane-based designer's philosophy of seamlessly blending traditional and modern beauty and functions. His product designs feature an exploration of different materials, vivid colours, striking and smooth shapes, and most importantly, people-friendly solutions. This reflects in his interior and furniture design projects, as well as in pieces sold by his brand Derlot. With this collection, he fuses design, nature, and fashion, creating a sizable impression on the design community at large. "I am thrilled to launch this collection, which represents a perfect fusion of form and function. It is an exploration of the natural processes that create these stunning marbles combined with the timeless appeal of the iconic camouflage pattern," shares Lotersztain, who brings together ideas for industrial design, interior design, and graphic design projects.
To capture the diversity and raw beauty of marble, the furniture designer uses marble sourced from around the world, showcasing the different characteristics of each. For instance, the 'Grigio Carnico' marble hails from Italy and displays captivating black and grey clouds along with exquisite white veining, while the 'Red Pilbara' marble, originating from Pilbara in Western Australia, exudes warm hues reminiscent of the Australian outback. The Italian 'Verdi Alpi' marble exhibits remarkable emerald and metallic formations, in contrast with the 'Nero Marquina' marble from Spain, which is renowned for its opulence and its luxurious black backdrop adorned with white crystal veins and shells. Similarly, a beige marble is included in the collection, offering a soft and neutral tone for needed contrast. Components masterfully cut from these different types of marbles are all made to fit seamlessly together, as designed puzzle pieces, to form these beautiful coffee tables.
The stunning 'Metamorphic Table' collection by Alexander Lotersztain was displayed at the 'Melbourne Design Fair' held in May 2023. It is a limited edition, but it shall remain a permanent accolade to his name.
